Itinerary

Day 1Fes - Midelt - Merzouga

The first day of the Fes to Marrakech desert tour is filled with excitement and adventure. After enjoying a hearty breakfast at your riad or hotel, you will meet your friendly driver-guide who will accompany you throughout the journey.

The journey begins with a scenic drive across the Saiss plains, where you can admire the stunning landscapes and charming villages. The first stop on the journey is the picturesque town of Ifran, which is famous for its unique modern architecture and is a popular winter holiday destination for the locals.

From Ifran, you will continue the journey by crossing the Cedar forests to reach the Berber town of Azrou, which is located in the heart of the Middle Atlas Mountains. Here, you will have the opportunity to make a quick stop and watch some Barbary Apes roaming around while capturing some amazing photos.

Afterwards, the journey will continue towards Midelt, which is the major commercial and agricultural center in the area, known for its mining industry and modern apple farms. Here, you will have the chance to stop for lunch and enjoy some delicious local cuisine.

In the early afternoon, you will descend into the Ziz Valley, which is well-known for its eye-catching oasis filled with date palm trees and scattered Kasbah villages. As you approach this area, you will notice a sharp change in scenery as the desert begins to approach.

As the day draws to a close, you will arrive at Merzouga, a small desert village located at the edge of Erg Chebbi dunes. Here, you will check into your lodge, which is situated in a prime location to capture stunning views of the dunes. You can unwind and relax, and enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner before spending the night at your Merzouga lodge, excited for the adventures that await on day two of your Fes to Marrakech desert tour.

Day 2Merzouga - Erg Chebbi Camp

The second day of the Fes to Marrakech desert tour is all about experiencing the unique and adventurous spirit of the Merzouga area. After enjoying a leisurely breakfast and a relaxed morning, you will meet your knowledgeable guide for a day full of exploration and excitement.

The first stop of the day is the village of Khamlia, where you will have the chance to meet local Berber nomads and experience their rich culture. They will play Gnaoua music for you, which is a traditional form of music that originated in West Africa and is characterized by a unique blend of rhythmic percussion and spiritual lyrics. You can also enjoy a cup of refreshing mint tea with them and learn about their way of life.

Afterwards, it’s time for some adventure as you hunt for fossils in the area and experience the thrill of sand bashing with your experienced driver. You will be amazed by the natural beauty of the desert and the power of the winds that have shaped it over time.

In the mid-afternoon, you will meet your camel caravan for a unique ride over the color-changing dunes. As you ride through the vast expanse of sand, you will feel a sense of tranquility and peace that can only be found in the desert. The highlight of the camel ride is stopping at the top of one of the sand dunes and watching the spectacular sunset on the horizon.

As the day draws to a close, you will arrive at your Sahara desert camp, which is located in the heart of the Erg Chebbi dunes. Dinner will be served under the starry sky (weather permitting), and you will have the chance to enjoy a Tam Tam drum session entertained by local nomads. This is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture and experience the magic of the desert at night. After an unforgettable day of adventure, you can retire to your comfortable tent and drift off to sleep under the twinkling stars.

Day 3Merzouga - Tinghir - Boumalne Dades

In the morning, you have the option to wake up early and climb one of the nearby dunes to watch a spectacular sunrise before breakfast. This is a memorable experience that you don’t want to miss. Ride your camel back to the main town and meet your driver.

Then, today’s adventure will begin with a visit to the holy town of Rissani, the ancient capital of Tafilalet, and the birthplace of the founder of the current ruling dynasty of Morocco. Rissani is renowned for its bustling markets, where you can find all kinds of goods, such as spices, textiles, and ceramics. You might also want to visit the local dates market and learn about the various types of delicious dates that the Tafilalet region is famous for.

We continue our journey towards Tinghir, a charming Berber village located in a picturesque oasis, surrounded by stunning landscapes of palm groves, rocky hills, and verdant gardens. Tinghir was a former military bastion during the French occupation and was once home to a significant Berber Jewish community until the 1660s when they mostly emigrated. Local Berbers inherited silver jewelry craftsmanship from the Jewish community, and visiting their shops is worth it.

Meet your local guide and take a leisurely walk along the oasis next to the stream, watching locals herding goats or working in their fields. You will also have the opportunity to visit a traditional Berber house and learn about their customs and way of life. End your walk with a breathtaking view of Todgha Canyons, a series of stunning 400m high limestone river canyons, carved by the Todgha River.

Late in the afternoon, we continue our journey to Boumalne Dades, where we will spend the night in a comfortable hotel. Along the way, we will drive through the scenic Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, a route that takes you through a chain of Berber villages and magnificent kasbahs, each with its unique architecture and history. Dinner will be served at the hotel.

Day 4

Day 4 is a full day of exploration and travel, starting with a visit to the Valley of the Roses outside Boumalne Dades. If you are visiting during the spring, you’ll be treated to the sweet scent of Damascus roses. You can also visit an artisanal rose water distilling facility to learn about the production process.

From there, you’ll take the road of 1001 Kasbahs to the oasis of Skoura, where you can walk to Kasbah Amridil, one of the best-preserved kasbahs in Morocco. It now serves as a private museum and offers a fascinating glimpse into Berber culture, architecture, and irrigation techniques.

Continuing on, you’ll make a quick stop in Ouarzazate before reaching the nearby Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou. This impressive structure is one of the world heritage sites of Morocco and has served as a set for many popular movies.

You’ll have the opportunity to explore the village and enjoy lunch at a local cafe before heading towards Marrakech. Along the way, you’ll drive through the stunning High Atlas Mountains and the Tizi Ntichka pass.

By late afternoon, you’ll arrive in Marrakech, and your 4-day tour from Fes will come to an end with drop-off at your hotel, riad, or a location of your choice.

When to hike in Morocco?

The best time to hike in Morocco is during the spring (March to May) and the fall (September to November). However, it’s still possible to hike in Morocco during the summer and winter months. Summer can be hot, but the higher elevations in the Atlas Mountains offer cooler temperatures. Winter can be cold, especially at higher altitudes, but there are still opportunities for winter hiking and skiing. It’s important to note that some trails and passes may be inaccessible during the winter months due to snow and ice.
