The Berber Villages and Toubkal trek is the best-of-both-worlds itinerary — the only 4-day trek in our range that combines Berber village cultural immersion with a summit attempt on Mount Toubkal (4,167 m), North Africa’s highest peak. Instead of rushing straight to the summit, you spend the first two days exploring the western valleys and acclimatizing naturally through village walking before ascending on Days 3–4.
Day 1 starts at Imi Oughlad (1,450 m) and crosses the Tizi n’Tachte pass (2,000 m) before descending through red-clay Berber villages to Tizi Oussem (1,850 m) in the Azzaden Valley. Day 2 visits the Ighouliden Waterfalls and crosses the Tizi M’zzik pass (2,489 m) into Imlil. Days 3–4 follow the classic Toubkal ascent route — Imlil to the Toubkal Refuge (3,207 m) and then the summit of Mount Toubkal (4,167 m) — with the benefit of two days of altitude acclimatization already completed.
The entire route lies within the Toubkal National Park (established 1942). This is a moderate to challenging trek, ideal for hikers who want both cultural depth and a genuine summit achievement in the same trip. For a summit-only approach, see our 4-Day Toubkal Ascent; for villages without the summit, see the Atlas 4-Day Berber Villages Trek.
In short: Two days of Berber village trekking through the Azzaden Valley as natural acclimatization, followed by a two-day Toubkal summit push — culture and achievement in one trip.
Imlil Trek operates under Extra Mile Travel (License #16D/19), a licensed Moroccan tour operator based in the Imlil valley with over a decade of experience organizing treks in the Toubkal National Park.
Note: Prices are for the 2026 season and may increase during winter. Additional costs may apply for porters, crampons, ice axes, and extra guides required for safety in winter conditions.
Transfer from Marrakech through the Moulay Brahim Gorge to Imi Oughlad (1,450 m). Acclimatization hike up switchback mule tracks through cornfields, pine, and juniper to the Tizi n’Tachte pass (2,000 m) with views of the Imlil and Ait Oussaden valleys. Lunch at Imi n’Ifri. Descent through red-clay Berber villages (Tahliouine, Id Aissa) to Tizi Oussem (1,850 m) in the Azzaden Valley. Overnight in guesthouse.
Day 1 Stats:
Trek to Azib Tamsoult and visit the Ighouliden Waterfalls — one of the highest cascades in the Atlas. Cross the Tizi M’zzik pass (2,489 m) with panoramic views of the Toubkal massif and the Ait Mizane Valley. Descend to Imlil (1,740 m). Overnight in guesthouse.
Day 2 Stats:
Trek through the Ait Mizane Valley, passing the village of Aremd and ascending to the sacred Sidi Chamharouch shrine (2,500 m). Continue climbing through alpine terrain to the Toubkal Refuge (3,207 m). Settle in and rest — two days of village acclimatization mean you arrive better prepared.
Day 3 Stats:
Early morning summit attempt. Climb to the summit of Mount Toubkal (4,167 m) — 360° panoramic views across the Atlas range, the Haouz plains, and toward the Sahara. Descend back to the refuge, then continue all the way down to Imlil (1,740 m). Lunch. Transfer back to Marrakech.
Day 4 Stats:
Seasonal note: This trek runs year-round. In winter (November–April), crampons and ice axes are required for the summit attempt. The village days (1–2) are comfortable year-round.
Moderate to challenging — a trek of two halves. Days 1–2 (village walking) are easy to moderate with 5–6 hours on gentle terrain. Days 3–4 (Toubkal ascent) are challenging — Day 4 involves 8–9 hours with +960 m ascent to 4,167 m and a 2,420 m descent back to Imlil.
The 4-Day Toubkal Ascent uses a direct route (Imlil → Refuge → Ouanoukrim → Toubkal → descent) with 3 nights at the refuge. This trek spends Days 1–2 exploring Berber villages in the Azzaden Valley, visiting waterfalls, and crossing the Tizi M’zzik pass — using village walking as natural acclimatization before the summit push on Days 3–4. You get the cultural experience AND the summit.
Yes — significantly. By the time you reach the Toubkal Refuge on Day 3, you’ve already spent two days hiking at 1,450–2,489 m, naturally adjusting to altitude. This makes the summit attempt on Day 4 notably more comfortable than a direct 2-day ascent.
Yes — full board including all meals from lunch Day 1 to lunch Day 4. Expert Berber cook with fresh ingredients.
Three different types: Night 1 in a Berber guesthouse (gîte) in Tizi Oussem village (1,850 m). Night 2 in a guesthouse in Imlil (1,740 m). Night 3 at the Toubkal Mountain Refuge (3,207 m) — shared dormitory with blankets, hot showers, and heated lounge.
The village days (1–2) are suitable for beginners. The Toubkal summit days (3–4) require good physical fitness and stamina. No technical climbing is required in summer, but prior mountain hiking experience is beneficial.
Hiking boots (essential for summit day), warm layers (down jacket), waterproof jacket, headlamp, water bottle, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, camera. In winter: gloves, balaclava, gaiters, thermal base layers.
The 4-day format with village acclimatization significantly reduces altitude sickness risk compared to a 2-day ascent. Most trekkers adapt well. Guides monitor conditions throughout.
Yes — fully private with your own licensed guide, cook, and mule team.
Late afternoon on Day 4 (around 5:00–6:00 pm) — Day 4 is a long day.
Yes — since 2019, a licensed mountain guide is mandatory for all treks in the Toubkal National Park. All Imlil Trek guides are CFAMM-certified and from the local Imlil region.
Yes — for a more relaxed pace, Day 4 can be split into two days (summit + overnight at refuge, then descent to Imlil the next morning), making this a 5-day trek. Ask us when booking.
