Day 1 of the Toubkal Circuit Via Lake Ifni trek begins with a hearty breakfast in Marrakech, followed by a scenic drive to Imlil via Asni. Imlil is a bustling market town and the primary starting point for hikers. After arriving in Imlil, we meet our mule team and load up our gear before commencing the trek.
We start by walking along the valley towards Tacheddirt, located approximately 8 kilometers beyond Imlil. As we ascend towards the pass at Tizi n’Tamatert (2,279m), we are treated to stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. From there, we make our way down to the picturesque village of Ouaneskra before continuing for another half-hour to reach Tacheddirt (2,300m), where we typically camp near the river.
Throughout the day, we will have ample opportunities to interact with locals and immerse ourselves in their way of life. We will also enjoy three delicious meals, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner, before settling in for the night. In total, we will trek for approximately 5-6 hours on day 1 of the Toubkal Circuit Via Lake Ifni trek.
On day 2 of the Toubkal Circuit Via Lake Ifni trek, we will start by crossing the valley before beginning a challenging ascent to the pass at Tizi Likemt, which stands at an elevation of 3,555m. The terrain is quite demanding, with a significant amount of loose scree underfoot, but the stunning views of the Toubkal massif make it all worthwhile.
After reaching the summit and taking in the breathtaking vistas, we begin a long and rewarding descent towards the village of Azib Likemt, where we will spend the night. The village is located in a picturesque valley surrounded by rugged mountains, providing a stunning backdrop for our campsite.
During the day, we will take regular breaks to rest, hydrate, and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding landscapes. Our experienced guides will ensure that we remain safe and comfortable throughout the trek. We will also enjoy three nourishing meals, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner, before retiring for the night. In total, we will trek for approximately 6-7 hours on day 2 of the Toubkal Circuit Via Lake Ifni trek.
On day 3 of the Toubkal Circuit Via Lake Ifni trek, we will embark on a long but relatively easy journey that will take us through a diverse range of landscapes. We will start by climbing to Tizi n’Ououraine, which is situated at an elevation of 3,120m, where we will enjoy stunning views of the Toubkal massif, including its summit, east face, and the Ifni Dome, which stands at an impressive 3,876m.
From there, we will continue along the trail towards Amsouzert, one of the most picturesque villages in the region. Along the way, we will pass through a variety of contrasting landscapes, including lush valleys and rugged mountain terrain.
Upon reaching Amsouzert, we will spend the night in a simple village Gite, dormitory-style. The accommodation may be basic, but it offers a unique opportunity to immerse ourselves in the local culture and hospitality. We will enjoy three nourishing meals, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner, before retiring for the night. In total, we will trek for approximately 7 hours on day 3 of the Toubkal Circuit Via Lake Ifni trek.
On day 4 of the Toubkal Circuit Via Lake Ifni trek, we will explore the charming small villages to the west of Amsouzert as we make our way towards Ifni Lake, which is the only lake in the Toubkal massif. The lake is a remarkable sight, surrounded by rocky mountains and giant heaps of rubble, and it’s unusually deep.
We expect to arrive at the lake by lunchtime, and we will spend the afternoon relaxing at its picturesque shore. It’s an excellent opportunity to take in the serene beauty of the lake and its surroundings. We will set up camp in this area and spend the night amidst the peaceful ambiance of the lake. The trek for the day will take approximately 4 to 5 hours.
On day 5, we will be well-acclimatized and ready to take on the toughest day of the trek. We’ll start by ascending a steep path that leads up a seemingly endless scree slope. After a challenging climb, we’ll reach the pass at Tizi n’Ouanoums (3,664m), a narrow ledge between two shafts of rock, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.
Next, we’ll begin a long zigzag descent to Nelter Hut, a mountain refuge where we’ll spend the night. Alternatively, we may choose to camp outside. This is a challenging day of the trek, taking approximately 6 to 7 hours, but the stunning views along the way will be well worth the effort.
Day 6 marks the final day of the trek, and it is the day that participants will summit the highest peak in North Africa, Mt. Toubkal. The day begins very early, before dawn, and the group follows a well-worn path to the summit. The ascent should take no more than 2-3 hours if conditions are favorable. Once at the top, the group can enjoy expansive views of the Atlas range and the Marrakech plains.
After taking in the views, the group will descend fairly rapidly to the villages of Sidi Chamharouch and Aremd. From there, they will follow the Mizane River along a well-forested trail to the trailhead at Imlil. If participants are staying in Marrakech, they will be taken there by car at the end of the day. The total trekking time for the day is around 9 to 10 hours.
It’s important to note that the itinerary is just a guideline and subject to change to suit local conditions. Participants should be prepared for any changes that may need to be made to ensure the safety of the group.
This trek is considered challenging, especially due to long trekking hours, high altitudes, and steep ascents like Tizi n’Ouanoums and the summit of Toubkal. Good physical fitness and prior hiking experience are recommended.
No technical climbing skills are needed. However, you should be comfortable with long uphill hikes and rocky paths. In winter, snow gear may be required.
You’ll stay in Berber gîtes, mountain refuges (like Nelter Hut), and tents/campsites near scenic spots such as Ifni Lake.
Yes, all meals are included. A local cook prepares traditional Moroccan food, and picnic lunches are provided daily.
The trek is fully supported by licensed mountain guides, muleteers, and a cook. Mules carry your gear between stops.
Yes, if weather and temperature permit, it’s possible to take a refreshing dip in the lake during the afternoon rest. However, it may be too cold during spring/autumn.
The best time is late spring (May–June) or early autumn (September–October) for ideal weather and clear mountain views. Winter treks are possible but require snow gear.
