Mount Toubkal, standing tall at 4167m, proudly claims its position as the highest peak in North Africa. Fear not, as this trekking experience does not require any climbing skills. During the trek, you will spend two days walking in crampons while securely holding an ice axe (applicable from November to April) for your safety. Designed for avid walkers, the itinerary offers a non-technical ascent, featuring easy scrambling and traversing snow slopes. As you reach the summit, prepare to be mesmerized by the awe-inspiring panoramic views. Marvel at the sprawling mountains that extend all the way to Marrakech in the north and witness the beginning of the Sahara Desert in the south. Embark on an exciting journey as we depart from Marrakech and make our way to the captivating Atlas Mountains. A comfortable 1 hour and 30-minute drive will take us to Imlil (1740m), a renowned starting point for mountaineering adventures. Prepare to immerse yourself in the charm of this region as we begin our trek.
Our exploration begins with a hike towards the remarkable Tizi-n-Mezzik mountain pass (2489m). As we ascend, be prepared to witness the breathtaking beauty of the Imlil area and the picturesque Azzaden valley. A truly magical view awaits you at the mountain pass. Here, amidst the enchanting juniper forest, our skilled cook will prepare a delicious field lunch for us.
After indulging in a satisfying meal, we continue our descent through the captivating Azzaden valley towards the summer village of Tamssoult (2250m). Along the way, revel in the awe-inspiring scenery that surrounds us. As the day draws to a close, we will spend the night at the refuge or set up camp, providing a comfortable resting place. Today’s trek will involve approximately 5 hours of walking.

Get ready for an exhilarating day of trekking as we leave Azib n Tamsoult and set our sights on reaching the Toubkal Base Camp. The journey begins with a challenging ascent out of the stunning Azzadene Valley. As we make our way up, we will encounter the magnificent Ighouliden waterfalls, adding to the scenic splendor of our adventure.
Our route will lead us over the impressive Aguelzim Mountain pass, standing tall at 3,560m. As we conquer this high point, we will be rewarded with awe-inspiring views of the sprawling Atlas Mountain Range. Prepare to be captivated by the grandeur of nature as we pause for a well-deserved lunch, surrounded by these breathtaking vistas.
As the day progresses, we will continue our trek towards the Toubkal Base Camp. This is where trekkers preparing to summit Mount Toubkal early the next morning gather. Our accommodation for the night will be at the Toubkal Refuge, also known as the Niltner Hut or Mouflon. Please note that the accommodation at the refuge typically involves sharing bunk rooms with fellow trekkers. Embrace the sense of camaraderie as you connect with like-minded adventurers.
Relish in the sense of accomplishment as we complete approximately 7 hours of walking today. Take this opportunity to rest and rejuvenate, for tomorrow holds the promise of reaching new heights.
Rise and shine as we prepare for the highlight of our trek – the ascent to the summit of Mount Toubkal (4,167m). An early start allows us to make the most of the day and maximize our chances of clear views over the Atlas Range and the Sahara Desert, if the weather permits. After savoring the beauty of the surroundings, we begin our descent, retracing our steps back to the Toubkal Base Camp. From there, we continue our journey downwards, following the well-trodden path that leads us back to Imlil. Be prepared for a long day of trekking, lasting approximately 8 to 9 hours. This challenging yet rewarding journey involves a steep ascent of 900m followed by a descent of almost 2,500m to reach Imlil.
As we reach Imlil, our trekking adventure comes to a close. We bid farewell to the mountains and begin our transfer back to Marrakech. The estimated arrival time in Marrakech is around 5:00 pm, allowing you to reflect on the incredible experiences and memories created during this remarkable trek.
This trek is moderately challenging, suitable for hikers with good physical fitness and some previous hiking experience. Expect daily treks of 5-9 hours with significant altitude gains.
Essential gear includes sturdy hiking boots, warm layers for varying temperatures, crampons and ice axes (provided from November to April), sun protection, a headlamp, water bottle, snacks, and a camera.
